In the World Trade Center in the capital the results of the III International Olympic Games of megalopolises among school students were summed up. Pupils of Moscow, Shanghai, St. Petersburg and Hong Kong became winners in a team competition.
School students from Belgrade, Sofia, Minsk, Istanbul, Budapest, Jakarta, Yerevan and Zagreb got the second place. On the third place there were teams of Leipzig, Baku, Dushanbe, Innsbruck, Milan, Astana, Alma-Ata, Bratislava, Bishkek and Banja Luka.
The best team result in mathematics was shown by Shanghai, Muscovites became the first ones in information technology and physics, and Minsk caused a stir in a competition in chemistry.
Tasks from the different countries
The International Olympiad of Megalopolises in Moscow was held on four platforms. Chemistry rounds took place in school No. 1253, physicists competed at school No. 2030, mathematicians were hosted by school No. 1241, and competitions in information technology were held in in the Yandex Company.
At first participants took part in an interdisciplinary warm-up dynamic blitz-tournament. The pool of tasks was made up of short tasks which teams had sent beforehand.
These problems are solved at final examinations in different countries. In some states educational programs strikingly differ, therefore, teenagers were at a loss while solving some tasks.
Besides, on 80 task cards the organizers did not specify the name of a subject, and from a condition it was not always clear. So teams could not always divide cards according to the subjects and solved a probem together.
High complexity of the tasks
"Physics and mathematics rounds have produced a great impression on our participants — the head of the team from Lima Victor Vera Cervantes said. “We prepared for them for half a year. As a teacher, I can say that the level of tasks is quite high. And it is good because it stimulates us to try even more!" "This year I have participated in the International Chemistry Olympiad. The tasks at the International Olympiad of Megalopolises are difficult too" — the participant from Baku Ali Aliyev shared his impressions of the first round in chemistry.
Bogdan Shishkin from Alma-Ata shared his impressions about the tasks of the second round in physics: "Tasks were difficult and interesting; they required a lot of hard work. The first task was in mechanics. In the second one which, by the way, I liked most of all, there was electric current: constant and variable. And the third task was connected with the mix of photometry, nuclear physics, a heat transfer and heavenly mechanics. I did my best, and, I think, I coped with the tasks".
Yang Yau Chiang from Hong Kong participated in the International Olympiad in mathematics in the summer, and has arrived in Moscow: "I have managed to solve three problems out of three. I cannot say for sure whether I will win or not. I have not prepared for this olympiad for a long time because I actively participated in the international olympiads before. But I estimate the complexity of these tasks as above average".
The team of Moscow
The children who had won and taken prizes in the All-Russian Olympiad of school students and at the international subject olympiads were chosen for the team. Before the International Olympiad of Megalopolises they attended extra-curricular activities, went to the educational training camps to the country, devoting weekdays and holidays to the preparation. The help to the participants in preparation for the Olympiad was provided by many higher educational institutions of the capital: Center for Teaching Excellence, Lomonosov Moscow State University, MIPT, Center of continuous mathematical education, Mathematical institute of Steklov and Higher School of Economics. It is important that they took the first step in science at their school.
"Literally in three years after the beginning of system changes the rapid growth in Moscow education began — the director of Moscow Center for Teaching Excellence Ivan Yashchenko stated. — In the past good results were achieved at schools which were not accessible for any child, but now success can be achieved practically at each school of the city".
The tasks of the competitions in Moscow correspond to the level of the international olympiads, therefore, the national teams of many countries included the International Olympiad of Megalopolises in the schedule of intellectual competitions for the participants to be trained at the beginning of the academic year once again on the way to victories in the main olympiads.
Olympic Games — "the uniting competition"
"It is an opportunity to gather and get acquainted — Ivan Yashchenko says. — The science becomes interdisciplinary now. Children will enter leading universities, will keep in touch and, perhaps, will make some joint discovery".
The Head of Moscow Department of Education Isaak Kalina has the same opinion. He called the International Olympiad of Megalopolises "the uniting competition": "We know well that all these three olympiads will be won by the future of science of our wonderful cities, thus, the future of our cities. We are strongly convinced that in about ten-twenty years we will hear the names of the children who won at the olympiads among the names of the best scientists of the world".
