What will the school in 2025-2030 be like? Is it rational to deny psychological services at schools in favor of tutors or homeroom teachers? Will there be new projects in pre-professional education? The Minister of the Government, the Head of the Moscow City Department of Education Isaac Kalina answered questions about the development of education during the online meeting yesterday.
The first question regarded the preparation of children for the world of the future. The Minister believes that many answers to this question can be found on the “School of the big future” portal. There is information on all projects of metropolis education, including, development of the Moscow electronic school, profile training, the Moscow Schooler’s Saturdays, the Olympiads, clubs from champions.
Isaac Kalina said, “Now it seems that we, adults, direct our child wherever we want, not only on physical but also psychological level. We tell him whom to play with, how and when. If the child does not learn how to organize himself since childhood, then at a more mature age, it will be tough to develop this quality. He will continuously expect to be told what to do — the ability of self-training is a crucial feature. It would be best if you did not wait for someone to teach you: passive learning is useless. When the child masters self-organization, self-learning, and skill of integration of information from the different subjects, the gained knowledge will be substantial.
Correspondingly, parents of the first-graders were concerned about the changes that can happen in an education system during the period when their children study at school.
“Probably it is the beauty of life that there are no specialists who can predict the future.” — the Minister noted. “The primary vector of development of school will be that we, as teachers, must not only teach but also to be such that children learn from us. They should acquire self-organization, self-training, comprehension of the necessary information, and how to search for it, since it is impossible to explain all world knowledge in eleven years of study. I am convinced that in the future, the ability to be capable of doing something with your hands will be equally crucial as the knowledge.”
Parents asked the Minister whether it is possible to consider reliable a school which is not listed among TOP-300 of the best educational institutions of the metropolis. According to the Head of the Moscow City Department, it is necessary to specify the definition of a "reliable school".
“In my opinion, it is an educational institution that always fulfills its obligations.” — Isaac Kalina said. “So, each family should look at what responsibilities of a school are more relevant to them. Some want their child to have a high standard of knowledge in mathematics or any other subject; someone wants their son or daughter to become a great athlete. For someone, the school must be reliable on the everyday schedule: if it is stated that today, there are five classes, and they will end at 13:33, then has to be that way. During the formation of the rating, various sets of parameters are counted: both educational progress of students, sports performances, results of the social sphere, and many another.
As for pre-professional education, it integrates a full set of the subjects necessary for a particular profession.
Isaac Kalina said, “We do not make it mandatory that all medical class graduates must enter medical universities. A task is to give to each senior student a chance to plunge into a profession; also, to understand whether and it is the right profession for him. Maybe he is going to medical university only because he has a high grade in biology.”
